There have been no reports of anyone overdosing on cannabis. One of the unique properties of the chemical components of cannabis, including both hemp and marijuana, is that they don’t cause respiratory or cardiac depression. When to Use: There’s a bit of a debate about using extra virgin olive oil in high-temperature cooking. We thumbed through the latest research, the USDA’s database on food nutrition and safety, and consulted with registered dietitian Hillary Wright to identify the health benefits of eight different oils and when it’s best to use them (depending on their smoke points) to make your time in the kitchen less daunting and more nutritious. Just remember, moderation is key. “It’s best to follow the recommendations of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and limit oils and saturated fats to less than 10 percent of your overall calories per day,” Wright says.

She said the bulk of the evidence favors polyunsaturated fats — found in fish, walnuts, and flaxseeds, as well as sunflower, safflower, soybean and corn oils — rather than monounsaturated fats, found in other types of nuts and seeds, avocados, and olive, canola and peanut oils. The data showed that if people replace saturated fats with polyunsaturated fats, they reduce their risk of heart disease somewhat more than if they replace saturated fats with monounsaturated fats.

Clinical cases are now being described where SC users are presenting with seizures or convulsions. In the United States, there have been reports of seizure activity after smoking various SCB and these were likely JWH-018, JWH-081, JWH-250, and AM-2201 (Lapoint et al., 2011; Schneir & Baumbacher, 2012; Simmons, Cookman, Kang, & Skinner, 2011). In Europe, McQuade et al. (2013) reported a 20-year-old male who had smoked “Black Mamba” and quickly went into tonic–clonic convulsions. Urine analysis revealed metabolites of AM-2201. 

The recreational smoking of marijuana, or Cannabis sativa, has become widespread, including among adolescents. Marijuana contains a class of compounds known as phytocannabinoids that include cannabidiol (CBD) and ▵9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). THC is the major psychoactive component in marijuana, but also exhibits immunosuppressive activity. CBD, while not psychotropic, also modulates immune function, but its mechanism of action appears to differ from that of THC. Since both compounds are highly lipophilic, they readily passage the blood–brain barrier and access the central nervous system. Since CBD is not psychotropic, it has been considered as a candidate therapeutic compound for ablating neuropathological processes characterized by hyperinflammation. Because it takes a significantly larger amount of hemp stalks to produce hemp oil, there is an increased risk of contamination of toxins contained within the plant. This is a result of hemp's strong bio-accumulator properties, where it pulls toxins from the soil it grows in. Many hemp oils are also known to lack the full spectrum of terpenes and other cannabinoids that are believed to act synergistically with the CBD, meaning that consumers receive less of a benefit. That being said, there are some brands that test rigorously to make sure that the CBD content, as well as the terpenes and other cannabinoids, are up to par. It's a good sign if they offer to provide a certificate of analysis, which will tell you what kind of compounds are in the hemp oil and in what concentrations

When it became clear that these natural products are nearly unique to the cannabis plant, or maybe simply because they were first identified from this source, these compounds were collectively named “cannabinoids.” Thus, the name “cannabinoid” indicates any secondary metabolite from various strains of cannabis with biogenetic origin from a terpene, normally geranyl pyrophosphate, and a phenol, i.e., olivetol or olivetolic acid. It is now established that cannabinoids are produced by the plant flowers as their corresponding carboxylic acids, which are then decarboxylated following heating or desiccation. Interestingly, a compound similar to CBG acid, but clearly not directly derived from olivetol, was recently isolated from South African plants of the Helichrysum genus (Lourens et al., 2008). Thus, cannabinoids might not be unique to the cannabis plant, although their biosynthesis in other plants might follow different routes. Furthermore, of all the natural cannabinoids that were initially tested, THC was shown to be the only one responsible for the “recreational” properties induced by the smoking of marijuana in humans. These properties can be described as generally mood and sensory altering effects leading to, among others, euphoria and sedation (Panagis et al., 2008). Later, a definition of THC-like activity was given as the ensemble of “central” pharmacological effects that THC induces in non-human primates, dogs (ataxia), and rodents. In mice, it was proposed that the concomitant induction of: (1) immobility in a square box, (2) catalepsy on a ring, (3) analgesia in the hot plate or tail flick tests, and (4) hypothermia, known as the “tetrad” of tests for “cannabimimetic” activity, would be a good predictor of THC-like pharmacological activity (Martin et al., 1991).


The 2014 Farm Bill[75] legalized the sale of "non-viable hemp material" grown within states participating in the Hemp Pilot Program.[76] This legislation defined hemp as cannabis containing less than 0.3% of THC delta-9, grown within the regulatory framework of the Hemp Pilot Program.[77] The 2018 Farm Bill allowed for interstate commerce of hemp derived products, though these products still fall under the purview of the FDA.[78][79]

Four studies have compared the heart-health effects of a diet rich in conventional sunflower oil, a polyunsaturated fat, with a diet rich in canola oil, which has more monounsaturated fat. The researchers concluded that sunflower oil and canola oil had similar effects: Both reduced people's levels of total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol, according to a 2013 review of those studies, published in the journal Nutrition Reviews.
But even though it's infiltrating pretty much every corner of the wellness world (hi, vegan CBD brownies!) many people still find CBD a little confusing—especially when it comes to figuring out the right way to use it and how to make sure the stuff you're buying is, you know, actually legit. Below, we asked experts to answer the most pressing questions about CBD.

This is a critical area for new research. While there is preliminary evidence that CBD may have therapeutic value for a number of conditions, we need to be careful to not get ahead of the evidence. Ninety-five percent of drugs that move from promising preclinical findings to clinical research do not make it to market. The recently announced elimination of the PHS review of non-federally funded research protocols involving marijuana is an important first step to enhance conducting research on marijuana and its components such as CBD. Still, it is important to try to understand the reasons for the lack of well-controlled clinical trials of CBD including: the regulatory requirements associated with doing research with Schedule I substances, including a requirement to demonstrate institutional review board approval; and the lack of CBD that has been produced under the guidance of Current Good Manufacturing Processes (cGMP) – required for testing in human clinical trials – available for researchers. Furthermore, the opportunity to gather important information on clinical outcomes through practical (non-randomized) trials for patients using CBD products available in state marijuana dispensaries is complicated by the variable quality and purity of CBD from these sources.
By 2022, the Brightfield Group, a cannabis and CBD market research firm, says sales are expected to reach $22 billion. The December passage of the 2018 farm bill will certainly help; the measure amended the term "marihuana" to exempt hemp as a controlled substance as long as it contains no more than 0.3 percent THC. Laura Freeman, chief executive of Homestead Alternatives, a Kentucky maker of CBD products, told me that "this is the first bright spot we've had in farming in a long time. We finally have a crop that has potential."
A condition in which a transplant attacks the body (Graft-versus-host disease (GVHD)). Graft-versus-host disease is a complication that can occur after a bone marrow transplant. I know this one is going to be a big shocker for a lot of people. Especially since grapeseed oil is constantly marketed as such a healthy cooking oil. Well, the “health” of grapeseed oil (and most of the other oils on this list) is all based on misleading information and myths about cholesterol and heart health (I’ve explained this all above, so if your skipping ahead, go back and read it if you really want to understand why grapeseed oil is not heart healthy!).


You can think of the full spectrum of all the chemical compounds found in cannabis as the “language” of the plant. It’s not one chemical, but all the chemicals combined working together that cause a response (again, the entourage effect). When you consume CBD oil, you gain the benefits of all those chemical substances in natural synergy. For that reason, you get full benefit at a dose range of 25-50 mg.
If medical marijuana is illegal in a given state, THC levels determine whether a CBD product is illicit or not. In most places, the limit is extremely low. We’re talking under 1 percent THC, with some states opting for a cap as low as 0.3 percent. In this case, the only source that would work is hemp, and CBD products will, therefore, be hemp-derived.
